Job Overview
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Structure: Semi-detached, two-storey residential home
Problem: Raccoon activity reported under rear deck
Service: Humane raccoon removal and deck exclusion
Visits: Two
Summary
We were contacted regarding suspected raccoon activity beneath a rear deck. Our team completed a full inspection, identified the active burrowing entry point, and carried out a humane exclusion using a one-way door and buried galvanized mesh. A follow-up visit confirmed successful removal and no further wildlife activity.
Background / Property Context
The property is a semi-detached, two-storey home with a raised wooden deck at the rear. The deck perimeter was accessible from grade and bordered by soft soil, creating conditions suitable for burrowing wildlife.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported ongoing raccoon activity on the property, with sounds and disturbances believed to be coming from underneath the back deck.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician Andrew identified an active burrowing entry point along the deck perimeter. Disturbed soil and an opening beneath the deck framing indicated repeated raccoon access. No other active entry points were observed at the time.

Cause Analysis
Raccoons commonly seek shelter beneath decks due to protection from weather and predators. In this case, open soil along the deck perimeter and the absence of buried screening allowed the animal to excavate an entry point. The elevated deck structure provided sufficient clearance for denning activity.
Treatment / Removal
A humane one-way door was installed directly over the identified burrowing entrance. This allowed the raccoon to exit the space beneath the deck while preventing re-entry. No trapping or lethal methods were used.

Exclusion & Repairs
To prevent future access, a trench approximately one foot deep and six inches wide was dug along the accessible perimeter of the deck. Approximately 36 feet of galvanized steel mesh was securely fastened to the deck framing, buried vertically one foot down, and extended outward six inches before backfilling. This created a continuous underground barrier to block future digging attempts.

Outcome & Confirmation
At the follow-up visit, the homeowner reported no further raccoon activity. The one-way door was removed, and the entire exclusion system was inspected and found to be intact. No new digging or wildlife signs were observed, and the issue was considered resolved.

Technician Notes
- Initial inspection confirmed a single active burrowing entry point under the deck
- One-way door functioned as intended with no signs of re-entry
- Buried galvanized mesh installed along accessible deck perimeter
- Final inspection confirmed exclusion integrity and absence of wildlife activity
