Summary
We responded to reports of rodent activity inside a detached bungalow in Hamilton. Although the concern was initially described as mice, our inspection confirmed rat activity. Treatment focused on exterior population control and interior monitoring. Exclusion work was recommended but declined, which contributed to recurring activity the following year.
Background / Property Context
The property is a single-story bungalow with aluminum siding and multiple ground-level transition points where siding, foundation, and utility lines meet. These areas commonly present access opportunities for rats when gaps or deterioration are present.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported ongoing rodent activity inside the home and believed mice were responsible. Noise and signs of movement prompted a request for inspection and treatment.
Inspection & Findings
During the exterior inspection, multiple gaps were observed along the foundation line and at utility penetrations. Several openings were large enough to allow rat entry. Interior conditions and reported activity patterns were consistent with rats rather than mice.
Photos provided show:
- Open gaps at foundation and wall penetrations with soil and debris visible
- Utility lines passing through unsealed foundation openings
- Deteriorated or separated building materials near ground level
- Open voids beneath siding and trim at deck and wall junctions
Cause Analysis
The infestation was driven by accessible exterior entry points at ground level, combined with deteriorated sealing around utility penetrations and siding transitions. Rats are capable of exploiting small gaps in foundations and wall assemblies. Without sealing these openings, exterior populations can repeatedly access interior spaces.
Treatment
All pest control work was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
On the initial visit, we installed two large, weighted, tamper-resistant exterior bait stations to reduce the exterior rat population. Inside the home, large baited snap traps were placed to intercept rats and prevent animals from dying within wall cavities or inaccessible areas.
Follow-up service included re-baiting and monitoring of the exterior stations after continued activity was reported.
Exclusion & Repairs
Exterior exclusion was identified as necessary to resolve the issue long term. A quote was provided to seal identified entry points along the foundation, siding, and utility penetrations. The homeowner chose not to proceed with exclusion at that time.
Outcome & Confirmation
Following treatment, rat activity was temporarily reduced. Approximately one year later, the homeowner reported renewed rat activity inside the home. The recurrence was consistent with previously identified entry points remaining unsealed. No exclusion confirmation was possible due to the work being declined.
Technician Notes
The inspection and treatment were carried out by Shaohua. Exterior access points were clearly visible and documented. The technician advised that without sealing these openings, rat activity was likely to return seasonally, which aligned with the later recurrence.
