Job Overview
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Structure: Two-story attached century home
Problem: Mouse activity inside walls; live mice observed; droppings present
Service: Mouse treatment
Visits: 4
Summary
We addressed an ongoing mouse infestation in a century home through inspection and repeated treatment visits over several years. Interior rodent activity was ultimately resolved; however, exterior exclusion work was declined, which contributed to recurring calls prior to final confirmation of control.
Background / Property Context
The property is an older, attached residential structure with a stone foundation and multiple exterior transitions typical of century homes. Age-related gaps and material deterioration can increase susceptibility to rodent entry when exclusion is not completed.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported scratching sounds within wall cavities, sightings of live mice, and mouse droppings inside the home. Tenants were affected by repeated activity over time.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, we identified conditions consistent with potential rodent access points along the exterior foundation and around window and sill interfaces. Interior conditions were consistent with an active mouse infestation. Photos appear to show foundation gaps, deteriorated mortar, and openings at lower elevations that could allow rodent entry.

Cause Analysis
Older masonry foundations and building interfaces can develop gaps due to settling and material wear. Mice are capable of exploiting small openings at grade level and around window framing. Without sealing these points, exterior pressure can continue even after interior populations are reduced. Seasonal movement and proximity to neighbouring structures can further increase pressure in attached homes.
Treatment / Removal
Mouse treatment was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines. Tamper-resistant bait stations were placed in areas of high activity to address the active infestation. This approach was used during multiple visits to reduce interior rodent presence. Technician Shaohua conducted the inspection and treatment work.
Exclusion & Repairs
Exterior exclusion was recommended but not approved by the homeowner. As a result, no sealing or permanent repairs to identified entry points were completed during these visits.
Outcome & Confirmation
Over time and with continued interior treatment, rodent activity inside the home was brought under control. By the final visit, no further mouse activity was reported within the living areas, and the interior issue was considered resolved. The homeowner and tenants reported relief following confirmation of no ongoing activity.
Technician Notes
- Initial visit focused on exterior inspection and interior mouse treatment.
- Follow-up visits were requested over several years due to recurring activity associated with untreated exterior entry points.
- Final visit confirmed no active rodent presence inside the home at the time of service.
