Hamilton, ON

Job Overview

Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey Tudor-style house
Problem: Early-morning attic noise consistent with squirrel activity
Service: Squirrel removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: Two visits

Summary

Pest Control Hamilton was contacted regarding suspected squirrel activity in the attic. Our team completed a roof-level inspection, identified an open drip edge along the front roofline, and carried out humane squirrel removal with permanent exclusion. A follow-up visit confirmed successful resolution with no further activity reported.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached two-storey Tudor-style home with a sloped asphalt shingle roof and front-facing eaves. The roofline includes a continuous drip edge above the gutter system, creating a vulnerable access area when left unsealed.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported hearing movement in the attic during early morning hours. The timing and location of the noise suggested potential squirrel activity, prompting a request for a professional inspection.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial visit, our technician inspected the roofline and eaves. A continuous opening was observed along the front drip edge, providing direct access into the attic space. No other active entry points were identified at the time of inspection.

Cause Analysis

Squirrels commonly exploit gaps along roof edges, especially where drip edges are not sealed or have deteriorated over time. The elevated position and continuous nature of the opening made it an accessible and protected entry point. Winter conditions can further drive squirrels to seek shelter in attic spaces.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal removal approach was used. A one-way door was installed at the primary drip edge entry point, allowing squirrels to exit the attic without re-entry. The work was completed during winter conditions with appropriate roof safety measures in place.

Exclusion & Repairs

Approximately twenty-five feet of the open drip edge along the front of the house was sealed using galvanized steel mesh. The mesh was mechanically fastened to prevent future wildlife access while maintaining proper roof drainage and ventilation.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further attic activity. The one-way door was removed, exclusion materials were inspected, and no new entry points were observed. Squirrel young were safely removed as part of the process, and the attic was confirmed clear of wildlife activity at the time of completion.

Technician Notes

The work was completed over two visits by our technician, Andrew. Installation and follow-up were completed as planned, with all exclusion remaining secure at the final inspection.

Photo Notes

Photos show galvanized steel mesh installed along the roof drip edge above the gutter line. Fasteners appear evenly spaced, securing the mesh flush to the roofline. Additional images show the completed exclusion from multiple angles along the front elevation.
